Vuyo Zangqa, one of the stars of the 2008/09 IRB World Sevens Series Champion Springbok Sevens team, is recuperating at his home in East London after undergoing surgery following a car accident in Gauteng a few weeks ago.
Zangqa, who turns 28 on Friday, suffered serious facial injuries in the accident. After two operations, medical doctors were able to save his left eye, but were not sure whether the fleet-footed Sevens maestro would regain sight in that eye.
Paul Treu, coach of the Springbok Sevens, gave the assurance that SA Rugby, the national sevens team and he himself would make sure Zangqa is properly looked after following the accident.
"This was such an unfortunate accident, which made us all realise how unpredictable life can be," said Treu.
"We will leave no stone unturned to help Vuyo with all the support he needs. He's been one of us for three seasons and deserves nothing less."
Andy Marinos, acting Managing Director of SA Rugby, said Zangqa's accident shook the rugby community in South Africa and abroad.
"From when we contracted Vuyo for the first time almost four years ago, we always knew he would make it on the highest stage and this season he showed why he is regarded as one of the best Sevens players in the world," said Marinos.
"Vuyo's accident is a massive setback, not only for Paul and the Sevens team, but for everyone involved in SA Rugby. He is in our thoughts and prayers.
"From our side, we will assist Vuyo in any way possible to ensure a full and speedy recovery. We are glad his eye could be saved and would be monitoring his progress. Hopefully he will regain full sight in the eye again."
Gavin Swanepoel, the Springbok Sevens team's life coach, will travel to East London on Thursday to support Zangqa.written by: super sport
